HPV Vaccination: What’s the Hype?

HPV or the Human Papillomavirus can cause 95% of all cervical cancers. Some studies claim that nearly 50%-80% of sexually active women are more likely to get caught by HPV once in their lifetime. Hence, getting the vaccine becomes more important than ever. The topic gained hype when the recent campaign by MSD against HPV prevention #HPVSearchKiyaKya featuring Sara Ali Khan caught public attention as it escalted on social media. With this they also launched an ad film #DontGetCaughtbyHPV featuring Actress Sayani Gupta, VJ Bani & rapper and singer Raja Kumari. This is the first digital only campaign that aims to educate young adults about the consequences of unprotected sex. The only challenge is that the two vaccines available in India are sold at steep prices and we need more government measures to make it accesible to all and people more aware.
